When a building is designated by the National Historic Registry, it can become something of a dusty trophy. But on the corner of 4th Street and First Avenue sits a 99 year old building that has been adaptively reused. The Heritage Preservation Commission’s restrictions only seemed to inspire more creativity for Tanek Inc., the architectural firm that handled the project. Their vision was to create a dining experience that is in harmony with the past, present and future. This vision clearly became reality – The original multiple level and entry points transformed into an integral part of the “see and be seen” concept. While cuts in the perimeter ledge are balanced with the central opening – creating vignettes and experiences that reveal the edges of the historic building. The reflecting pool, two-story light element, rich fabrics, and colors create an unmistakably opulent Indian feel. A contemporary American interpretation of the wonders of a faraway land.
